• Erin “Abby” Abra Franklin

  Abby has always loved children. She moved to the West Coast in 1989 to study early childhood education. She worked for several early education facilities but was disillusioned by their philosophy. At age 23, she opened A Loving Space School. A Loving Space Kindergarten came along in 2001. Long hours, the need to wear many hats and the financial challenges of operating a school haven’t deterred her. Her passion for what she believes is best for children and her vision for how workers should be treated drive her success. 1970-

• Kirk Mooney

  Kirk graduated from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. He was drafted and served in the military during Vietnam. When he returned, his job at U.S. Steel was gone. Not discouraged, he found work with a small steel fabricating company. When that company was sold four years later, Kirk and a fellow worker struck out on their own, forming a fabricating and grinding company. The venture took all the funding they could raise – and more. Their long hours have paid off, and they continue to operate a successful enterprise. 1947-

• Brad Mooney

  Brad graduated from Syracuse University as a landscape architect. He lost his job in the Recession of 1972-1973, finding another with Butler County, Pennsylvania, rebuilding the historic Cooper Cabin. This started his new career, which led to a new company that rebuilds and relocates old log cabins, using authentic tools if requested. He built a log cabin in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the University of Pittsburgh and is completing the extensive rebuild of Fort Ligonier for the State of Pennsylvania. 1945-

• David Holland Franklin

  Born to lead. Even as a young man, David was at the forefront of class activities, especially late-night pranks. Following his graduation from Cornell University, he finally got serious, marrying Sharon Mooney, becoming a father, joining the Army and leaving to serve in Germany all in one year. After his military discharge, he joined Scott Paper Company in Everett. He went on to manage nine separate pulp and paper mills during his career, including the Georgia Pacific plant in Bellingham from 1988-1994, when the facility employed 1,700. 1943-

• Ted R. Decker

  Ted was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II. He was assigned to the newly formed 101st Airborne Division. He crash-landed a glider in Holland during the Normandy Invasion on July 6, 1944. He served with his division through four major European campaigns, earning the Silver Star for gallantry and a Purple Heart for wounds suffered at Bastogne, Belgium. After the war, he returned home and started a successful business breeding and selling quarter horses. 1921-2005

• Don “Moon” Hunter Mooney

  While he had some college, Moon toiled in steel mills during World War II. He gradually worked his way up, landing a job at U.S. Steel as a vice president. He did his own taxes every year and enjoyed it – the preparation not the paying. He also did his own investing. In the early 1970s, he became a spokesman for the appliance industry, promoting the new colored models over the traditional “sanitary” white ones. He was very proud of the new steel used in making the appliances, which had a texture that didn’t show fingerprints. 1917-1985

• Bessie Manning Savage

  Bessie Manning Savage was a trailblazer; her nickname was Tiger. Never afraid of a challenge, she was one of the first young women in Sharon, Pennsylvania, to be trained on a newfangled piece of office equipment – the manual typewriter. After her marriage to James Savage, she managed the books for his butcher shop. She had one of the first gas clothes dryers, and when the fashion for plumbing fixtures turned from stark white to colors, she was at the head of the line, installing navy blue fixtures in one of her children’s bathrooms. 1895-1982

• James “Poppy” Savage

  James started work at age 11, sweeping up in a butcher shop in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. He went on to become a butcher and ultimately owned his own shop. Despite rationing, his business survived the Depression thanks to his tenacity and willingness to adapt to market conditions. He imported horse meat to meet demand from his well-to-do customers. He took his daily proceeds home in a paper bag to his wife, Bessie, who managed his books. He was successful in a time before supermarkets and income tax. 1895-1964

• John Patrick “J.P.” Mooney

  John was a small boy when his family moved to McKeesport, Pennsylvania, from Ireland around the turn of the Century. His family was in the buggy business – as in horse & buggy. As the times changed, so did their business. First, they sold Model T Fords, then it was the stylish Packard. Despite the Depression, people with money were still buying cars, and their dealership survived. Adapting again, they started selling imports in the 1970s, bringing in Volkswagens from Germany. 1894-1976
